Dtac faces huge fine following outages
The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Board (NBTC) summoned Dtac executives to an urgent meeting late Tuesday afternoon, demanding they explain the crashes in the company's mobile services across the country during the day, reports said.
NBTC secretary-general Thakorn Tanthasit said an urgent letter was sent to Total Access Communication Co. Ltd (Dtac) pointing out that service disruptions on Tuesday morning had caused problems for millions of mobile phone users.
He said the board planned to fine the company up to an eight-digit sum. Dtac had been spared from penalties so far for five service disruption services this year alone.
“The NBTC said it had issued a warning to Dtac earlier that it can no longer have any service problems,” he said.
“Dtac cannot file any petition against the fine. This is not the first time. Every time the company has a problem they have always promised that it will never happen again,” the secretary-general said.
He said the NBTC board has no choice but to fine the company, saying that even if the fine were over 100 million baht Dtac would have to accept it.
Dtac must also provide “pay-back” to its customers, as it has always done in the past.
He said Dtac’s customers can file complaints with the NBTC or the Consumer Protection Board.
The mobile phone service provider issued a statement explaining the disruption.
It had "experienced a fault with one of the several pairs of MPLS Signaling Routers at the Rangsit Switching Centre, resulting in a combined down time of 65 minutes (11.06am-11.26am and 12.00 noon to 12.45 pm). The mishap affected approximately 20 per cent of customers in various parts of the country", the statement said.
