I am confused.
What does "duty free" mean in Thailand, or more specifically what does it mean to the so-call duty free merchants at Suvarnabhumi Airport?
I recently made a return trip to Australia and decided to buy a bottle of Thailand's own product, Regency Brandy, to which I am partial. Imagine my surprise when I was asked Bt720 a bottle. I can buy exactly the same bottle at the house shop in my soi for Bt460. How on earth does a more than 50 per cent mark up constitute duty free?
If this is indicative of the general pricing policy of Suvarnabhumi's duty-free shops then the Thai and international travelling public are being fleeced. If Thailand really values its tourist industry something should be done about this immediately.
