Det lyder ikke som om jeg skal planlægge en nytårstur sydpå !!!

The South will probably be hit by insurgent bomb attacks both before and during the New Year holiday period, national police chief Pol General Wichean Potephosree said yesterday, based on a recent intelligence report.

Most of Yala and Narathiwat provinces are at risk, as well as the Hat Yai district in Songkhla province. Though Pattani is not included in the warning, residents are advised to remain cautious, he said.

He said police "were not taking this warning lightly" and were setting up preventive measures. Wichean was speaking after visiting a police bomb-disposal unit in Yala and reassuring Muslim clerics in the South that scientific evidence would bring justice to the region.

Næ Næ Pen hold dig langt væk derfra. Vi skulle jo gerne have fine billeder fra nytårsaften, og ikke død og ødelæggelse.

Foto slæde samtidig en glædelig jul og et godt og lykkebringende nytår til alle. music

Seconds after this video frame six killers in the pick-up with its lights on gunned down the soldiers escorting the monk (bottom) on his Saturday morning alms rounds in Yala - all caught clearly in the CCTV broadcast.

Police are hunting a group of six suspects who were caught on closed-circuit camera brutally killing two soldiers escorting a Buddhist monk during his morning alms round in Yala's Muang district yesterday.

Camera footage first shows a green pick-up truck parked about 20m from the shooting scene. Two suspected insurgents are seen sitting in the front, while another four are on the back of the truck.

The vehicle then drives past the monk and the soldiers, and the four assailants sitting on the truck are seen to shoot the two soldiers.

A suspect then jumps down from the truck to take a weapon from one of the bodies.

The footage clearly shows the licence plate of the Mitsubishi pickup truck used by the attackers, and police said yesterday that they were using this evidence as a starting point in their investigation.

The dead soldiers were identified as Pvt Sunsudee Mezae, 28, and Cpl Suriya Chaiyan, 48. They were members of the 11th Yala Special Task Force, responsible for providing protection to monks in the province.

Anumat Ruenphanit, who is heading the investigation, said the incident happened about 7.30am when the two soldiers were accompanying Phra Sawat Khemwino, 48, of Wat Hua Saphan, along a road by the Pattani River.

The attackers came along in a pickup truck and sprayed them with bullets, Pol Lt Anumat said. The monk narrowly escaped the bullets fired from M16 and AK assault rifles, and suffered only bruises.

One attacker then jumped from the truck and snatched an M16 rifle from one of his victims before fleeing the scene, the police investigator said.

In Pattani, a man believed to be a key figure of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) separatist movement was killed and a Border Patrol Police officer was wounded in a gun battle that erupted at a house in Yaring district on Friday.

The dead man was Ruyi Bueraheng, 27, a key RKK figure operating in nearby Mayo district, said Suchart Theerasawat, who led the border police operation.

Pol Maj Gen Suchart said his team had learned that Ruyi, who has been wanted by police since 2006, was hiding in the house.

When they raided the premises, there was a gun battle that lasted for about 10 minutes before Ruyi was found dead.

Pol Sgt Maj Damrong Phalee, one of the police team, was shot in the stomach and rushed to hospital.
